Vandalism of Health Centre in Mozambique Reflects Ongoing Instability
The Nametil health centre in Mozambique was vandalized by armed assailants, resulting in extensive damage and the loss of a patient’s life. The incident follows prior unrest linked to alleged election fraud. Additionally, an unsuccessful attack on a police command in Liupo district indicated ongoing instability, requiring government intervention to restore control.
In a disturbing incident, the Nametil health centre in the Mogovolas district of northern Mozambique has been vandalized by unknown assailants armed with a range of weapons, including Molotov cocktails. The attackers severely damaged critical areas of the facility, such as the pharmacy, laboratories, storeroom, and paediatric ward, resulting in the destruction of medicines and property. Tragically, one patient undergoing treatment lost his life during this assault, prompting the nurses on duty to flee for their safety.
This attack is not an isolated incident; the Nametil health centre was previously targeted during civil unrest linked to the controversial results of last October’s elections. Notably, a mob had destroyed a Cholera Treatment Centre established with the help of the NGO “Doctors Without Borders.” Further complicating the situation, a separate group attempted to assault the police command at the Quinga administrative post in the nearby Liupo district. Fortunately, due to timely intelligence, police defenses were effectively organized, averting the incident.
Quinga had been out of government control for two months following a declaration from a supporter of the former presidential candidate, Venancio Mondlane, who assumed the title of “Regulo” (chief) and targeted government officials. Consequently, the district government deployed riot police to re-establish control over Quinga earlier this year, in January.
The vandalism of the Nametil health centre paints a grim picture of ongoing instability in Mozambique, exacerbated by prior unrest stemming from disputed election results. This attack underscores the vulnerability of healthcare facilities in conflict zones and the urgent need for improved security and governance. The authorities’ efforts to regain control in areas like Quinga highlight the challenges faced in restoring order amidst such turmoil.
