With approximately 30 eateries, this food street offers families a spacious alternative to the crowded historic Kartarpura Street.
Historically, Kartarpura has been a significant commercial hub in Rawalpindi’s Sikh district, renowned for its traditional dishes like nihari and siri paye. Although traffic congestion and overcrowding have deterred many, the New Kartarpura Food Street was established on Ramadan’s first day to alleviate these issues. This venue seeks to enhance family-friendly dining experiences and will remain operational after Ramadan’s conclusion.
Abdul Latif Rashid from Kala Khan Nihari House expressed enthusiasm for the new location, noting that it has generated positive public feedback. The initiative, inspired by Ramadan food festivals in Dubai, promotes small businesses and fosters a vibrant community atmosphere, according to organizer Raja Usama.
Muhammad Hamza of Lahore 0 Kilometer stated that visitors from nearby cities are drawn to their diverse lassi offerings. His expression of admiration for Arab culture is evident in his traditional attire, which has been well received by patrons. This multicultural representation adds a unique charm to the food street.
For Mahnoor Kareem, a Chinese language instructor, the New Kartarpura Food Street serves as a preferable alternative to the traditionally congested Kartarpura. She noted that the family-oriented environment encourages visits, especially for popular dishes such as paye and lassi.
Kanwal Zahra, another vendor, highlighted the traditional recipes her cuisine offers, including roti and palak paneer, which have been passed through generations. Meanwhile, Meena Nabeel, a dumpling seller, noted that skepticism surrounding new foods like momos diminishes after people experience their quality, leading to repeat customers.
