Rescue of Missing Foreign Hikers in the Philippines Successfully Completed

Four foreign hikers, who had been lost for days in Negros Oriental province in the central Philippines, were rescued on Saturday. This incident followed the rescue of their two companions the previous day. The group comprised individuals from Germany, Britain, Russia, and Canada, who embarked on a four-hour hike but encountered severe weather conditions.

Local authorities reported that the hikers were found near the Silab hydropower plant in Amlan, close to the Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Natural Park. Rescue official Jose Lawrence Silorio confirmed the successful recovery of all four men: Germans Aldwin Fink, aged 60, and Wolfgang Schlenker, aged 67; Russian Anton Chernov, aged 38; and Canadian Terry De Gunten, aged 50.

During the rescue, the Philippine Army personnel identified that the group had lost their way due to fog in the mountainous terrain. They were found on Saturday at approximately 9:44 am local time. While all were reported to be in good condition overall, they did experience some minor injuries. Silorio noted that one hiker required a blanket due to feeling cold but was able to stand afterward.

The group reported surviving by consuming edible plants available in the forest. Authorities indicated that they were located about 10 kilometers from where their companions, Torsten Martin Groschupp, aged 58, and Alexander Radvanyi, aged 63, were rescued on Friday. Police attributed the hikers’ difficulties to poor weather, which contributed to “zero visibility” on the tough and unmarked trail. Additionally, the absence of cell phone reception posed further challenges for the hikers.

The rescue of the six foreign hikers underscores the importance of preparation and awareness of weather conditions when embarking on outdoor excursions. The successful recovery highlights the efforts of local authorities and rescue teams, demonstrating their commitment to ensuring the safety of individuals exploring challenging terrains.
