China’s CRRC Ziyang Exports Diesel Locomotives to Mozambique

CRRC Ziyang has successfully exported three internal combustion locomotives to Mozambique, marking the first supply by a Chinese company for the country’s railway network. These SDD1 diesel locomotives are designed for African operational conditions, featuring technological advancements and serving crucial transportation roles. This export reinforces CRRC Ziyang’s leadership in the global diesel locomotive market, having supplied over 1,200 units worldwide.

On March 10, 2023, three internal combustion locomotives manufactured by CRRC Ziyang Co. were exported to Mozambique, marking a significant milestone as this is the first instance of a Chinese company supplying such locomotives to the Mozambican railway network. This initiative signals CRRC Ziyang’s successful re-entry into the African market, specifically the diesel locomotive sector, laying a foundation for further exports from Sichuan this year.

The SDD1 diesel locomotives, tailored for African operational conditions, incorporate numerous technological advancements developed by CRRC Ziyang’s technical team. Features include a lightweight design, an efficient cooling system, a novel corrugated louver structure, and a modular air intake unit. Moreover, an intelligent control system allows for real-time monitoring, improving reliability and safety during operation.

These SDD1 diesel locomotives will serve critical roles in passenger and freight shunting operations within Mozambique, contributing significantly to the local railway infrastructure. CRRC Ziyang’s connection to the African market spans 24 years, during which it has delivered over 230 locomotives and DMUs to nearly 20 countries such as Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

As a prominent player in China’s diesel locomotive export market, CRRC Ziyang has achieved a significant milestone with the supply of over 1,200 locomotives to 34 countries globally, capturing over half of China’s total diesel locomotive exports.

The export of the SDD1 diesel locomotives by CRRC Ziyang to Mozambique represents a pivotal achievement in international trade for China, specifically in the transportation sector.
