Tragedy Strikes Ruwi Village as Armed Attack Claims Ten Lives
An armed attack in Ruwi village, Nigeria, led to the deaths of ten people. This region in Plateau State frequently experiences inter-communal violence, particularly between Muslim herders and Christian farmers. Local officials and residents have called for increased security measures following the tragic shooting that occurred during a funeral ceremony.
On March 29, 2025, an armed attack on Ruwi village in Plateau State, Nigeria, resulted in the tragic death of ten individuals. This region is often beset by violent clashes stemming from inter-communal disputes. Ruwi, located on the dividing line between Nigeria’s predominantly Muslim north and largely Christian south, has witnessed consistent violence primarily between nomadic herders and sedentary farmers.
Local leader Moses John recounted how unidentified gunmen invaded the village, firing indiscriminately, and causing ten fatalities. Additionally, three villagers sustained injuries and were promptly transported to local medical facilities for treatment. Joshua Maren, a resident, expressed his inability to understand the motives behind the attack and called for increased security measures in the area.
Plateau State police spokesman Alfred Alabo confirmed the incident, noting that the attack occurred around 9:20 PM on Thursday. He described the event as an incursion by armed assailants during a mourning ceremony in the village, resulting in both deaths and injuries among unsuspecting citizens.
In light of the incident, Joyce Ramnap, the state’s information commissioner, urged security forces to take swift action against the assailants to deliver justice for the victims. The atmosphere of tension in Plateau State has escalated since a violent incident in December 2023 in which approximately 200 individuals were killed in an attack targeting a Christian community. Previous violence also occurred in May 2024, where around 40 people were killed in Wase, and homes were destroyed.
The attack in Ruwi village in Plateau State represents a severe escalation in the region’s ongoing cycle of violence, highlighting the dire need for enhanced security measures. With a history of inter-communal conflict, particularly between herders and farmers, the situation remains precarious. Local leaders are calling for governmental intervention to ensure safety and restore order, amidst concerns over rising tensions following previous violent incidents.
