Water Mission Mobilizes Disaster Response Team in Myanmar and Thailand

Water Mission is deploying a Disaster Response Assistance Team to Southeast Asia following a severe earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand, which has resulted in over 150 deaths and significant infrastructure damage. The team will assess critical water and hygiene needs, using over 20 years of disaster response experience to deliver effective humanitarian assistance.

Water Mission, a Christian engineering nonprofit, is deploying a Disaster Response Assistance Team to Southeast Asia in the aftermath of a magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck Myanmar and Thailand. This catastrophic event has led to significant destruction of infrastructure, including buildings, homes, and roads. The team will first operate in Thailand to evaluate the region’s needs regarding safe water, sanitation, and hygiene.

The earthquake has reportedly resulted in over 150 fatalities, with many additional individuals reported missing. As initial assessments continue, these figures are expected to increase. Access to clean and safe water is crucial during such crises to prevent the proliferation of waterborne diseases, particularly among vulnerable populations such as children.

George C. Greene IV, PE, CEO and President of Water Mission, noted, “Water Mission has responded to more than 60 disasters around the world, including similar large earthquakes over the last two years in Turkey and Morocco. Our Disaster Assistance Response Team is well versed in quickly mobilizing and collaborating with partners on the ground to provide emergency assistance as quickly as possible where it is needed most.”

With over two decades of experience in providing immediate and sustained safe water solutions during natural disasters and humanitarian emergencies, Water Mission has effectively assisted diverse crises. In the last two years alone, they have responded to hurricanes in the US and Caribbean, flooding in East Africa, earthquakes in Turkey and Morocco, cholera outbreaks in Malawi, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Since its inception in 2001, the organization has reached over 8 million people globally.
