Police Arrest Trafficking Syndicate for Exploiting Girls in Mauritania
The Zone 2 Police Command in Lagos has arrested a trafficking syndicate involved in sending Nigerian girls to Mauritania for prostitution. Detained suspects disclosed committing the crime, including a mother who recruited her own daughter. Investigations are ongoing, and legal action will follow.
Operatives from the Zone 2 Police Command in Onikan, Lagos, have arrested a syndicate accused of trafficking young girls from Nigeria to Mauritania for purposes of prostitution and sexual exploitation. The announcement was made by the Zonal Public Relations Officer, CSP Umma Ayuba. The apprehension occurred on March 22 at their base in Meiran, Lagos.
According to CSP Ayuba, the Zonal Intelligence Response Squad conducted the operation, which led to the capture of two suspects. One suspect disclosed that she was introduced to a Mauritania-based woman by an individual already incarcerated for similar crimes. This person was instructed to recruit girls under 22 for exploitation and received ₦50,000 per recruit while admitting to sending her own daughter.
The second suspect revealed that she was hired to recruit girls for domestic work in Mauritania. Upon investigating, she learned that the girls were destined for sex work and decided to withdraw, realizing the severity of the situation when her only recruit was rejected for age and size. Continued investigations are underway, and both suspects are expected to face legal charges soon.
The arrest of the trafficking syndicate signifies a proactive approach by the Zone 2 Police Command towards combating human trafficking in Nigeria. This case sheds light on the alarming issue of young girls being exploited for sexual purposes, calling for continued vigilance and legal action against such criminal activities.
