Oshana Region Records 26 Drownings, Police Urge Safety Caution

From January to May 2025, the Oshana Region witnessed 26 drowning cases, with 16 occurring in February and March alone. The most recent tragic incident involved 29-year-old Mukelebai Herre Nasikambo, who hails from Katima Mulilo in the Zambezi region. According to reports, he drowned while fishing in a man-made dam located in Oshakati. At the time of the incident, he was accompanied by his girlfriend. The couple had reportedly gone fishing together when the accident occurred.

Sakaria explained that Nasikambo had entered the water to retrieve a fish that had gotten stuck in an empty floating cooldrink container. Unfortunately, as he swam, fatigue set in, leading him to call out for help. His girlfriend, who remained near the shoreline, attempted to summon aid, but tragically, assistance arrived too late to save him, Sakaria stated.

Fortunately, divers from the police’s Special Reserve Force managed to recover Nasikambo’s body from the water. In response to the alarming number of drowning incidents, Sakaria has taken the opportunity to issue an urgent warning to the community, urging individuals to stay away from deep water to mitigate the risk of further misfortunes.
