Camps such as Nzulo, located on the outskirts of Goma, are now overwhelmed with displaced persons seeking refuge. Some evacuees are leaving these camps as the rebel threat intensifies.

One evacuee, David Kasereka, expressed his despair, stating, “We do not know where we are going, because everywhere, the bombs are following us.” Another displaced individual, Nadège Bauma, explained, “We just learned that the M23 have arrived in Ngwiro…and we decided to leave the area because bullets and bombs are falling.”

The provincial governor of South Kivu, Jean-Jacques Purusi, confirmed the recent capture of Minova and additional towns by the rebels. Congo’s military reported continued advances made by the M23 in regions like Minova and Bweremana. The situation remains dire as countless individuals face the risk of violence and further displacement.

The M23 rebel group has been operating in eastern Congo since it broke away from the Congolese military over a decade ago.
