Mozambique Braces for Cyclone Dikeledi: A Multi-Sectoral Assessment

Tropical Storm Dikeledi has intensified into a cyclone impacting Mozambique, particularly Nampula province. The cyclone poses risks of severe weather including heavy rainfall and damaging winds, endangering over 255,000 people and threatening vital infrastructure such as schools and health facilities. Assessments indicate significant potential for flooding and damage in affected regions.

Mozambique is currently grappling with the impacts of Tropical Storm Dikeledi, which has intensified into a tropical cyclone as it traverses Nampula province. Although it is anticipated to weaken while on land, forecasts predict Dikeledi may re-enter the Mozambique Channel near Angoche district on January 14, potentially escalating into a stronger cyclone as it approaches Madagascar.

The provinces of Nampula, Cabo Delgado, and Zambezia are in the midst of severe weather, particularly around the landfall zone, with Nampula experiencing the brunt of the adverse conditions. Heavy rainfall and destructive winds are causing hazardous sea conditions, impacting areas between Ilha de Moçambique and northern Zambezia.

The National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD) estimates that approximately 255,310 individuals are at risk, with 98,000 in urgent need of assistance. Cyclone Dikeledi is expected to bring heavy rains and strong winds, increasing the risk of flooding and infrastructure damage, notably affecting education and healthcare facilities.
